Stephen Pierce Internet Profit Taker Course – Day 2

Filed in: StephenPierce by Roy Sutanto on 09-20-07

Again I am very sleepy now but I shall follow Mike Litman advice which is “What is it that you do not want to do today but if you do it, it could benefit your future?”

As I have made a commitment to post at least 1 article everyday, I shall write about what I learned today.

Strategy vs Tactics — Stephen Pierce Internet Profit Taker Course – Day 2

Today’s topic is Strategy vs Tactics. So…

1. What are strategy and tactics?

Every people sure have the strategy in doing something. It can be strategy in doing business, studying, chasing gals, sports, and competition. Oh yeah to make it simple, I guess cheating or plagiarism (I learn this superb word in SIM. lol) is also considered as strategy. Agree??

If you are a lazy student like me, you sure committed this offense before in your school. How bout myself? Of course I did cheat before during my school time (I’m not proud of it ok even though I always succeed hehe :D ). Omg, it was very scary and daring thing to do and hopefully you won’t get caught until the exam end.

Ok I shall change to another example. Let’s talk about game instead. If you like to play the strategy game like Warcraft 3, W.O.W, Command & Conquer or Company of Heroes. You surely have your own strategy in mind that usually being applied to win the game right?

Let’s take warcraft as example. Imagine you are playing the game right now.

You have build all your base and set up number of troops. The next thing you want to do is to have a glance at your enemy base and you send out one cheapest and lousiest troop to explore the whole big map and hopefully manage to view a little bit of the enemy base. However before you actually start exploring, you have already illustrated the whole process in your mind. Correct?

Or before you actually attack enemy’s base, you have all the plan illustrated in your mind on who should you kill first and followed by the next.

Yup this whole process of thinking is called tactics. So those would be the tactics that would be used to execute the strategy.

Maybe up until this point, you will ask me “So what’s the different between tactics and strategies?” I was asking myself as well during my lesson just now. After reading and re read again. I finally understand what are the difference.

Strategy is the whole process that we think in our mind whereas tactics is the process when we implementing the strategy. To make it simple,

Strategy = Planning

Tactic = the action of executing your plan

It can get very tricky. Let me give you another normal life example: (Hopefully you will understand fully after looking at this example)

If you want to get rich, what are the strategy you need to come out with?

  1. Learn from the rich people
  2. Build businesses

So what are the tactics?

  1. Buy books or do a research about the rich people
  2. Get a job at the area of business you are interested in and get as much knowledge or sources as possible after that quit and continue building your dream business

2. How to make strategy and tactic works

Make a list of every single thing that you have, such as books, educational tapes, softwares, laptop, voice recorder, etc. Put them aside and sit down. You need to look at them and ask yourself, “Where do they fit in to my entire strategy? and What is it that I am looking to do?”

If you are doing business and looking to expand it online by using internet, you probably have bought ebook or home study material on what essential steps to take before taking your business online, how to set up a profitable website from scratch, how to generate traffic to your website, what are the tools that are needed to accept payment, how to cut production cost by turning your product into digital, how to master the basic html within 3 hours, etc etc.

At one point you were so excited and focus but after reading few pages on the book and suddenly your phone rang, you were invited to play golf with your friends and you said yes. Hence you said to yourself that you will continue reading it tonight but after reaching home, you were distracted by TV hence you said to yourself again “I will read it tomorrow” and tomorrow same process happening again and again. As the result your books are collecting dust. After few months or years your business is still not online yet.

So please ask yourself these question again “Where do they fit in to my entire strategy? and What is it that I am looking to do?”

The next thing you need to do after answering those questions are:

  1. Set your goal – what you want to achieve?
  2. Set your objective – what are they that must be reached to succeed
  3. Set your target – How long will you take to reach your goal

3. Summarize of Strategy vs Tactic

The strategy has to drive everything. The tactics do not drive the business, the strategies do. They set the direction, the course, and map out a path so you can navigate through it. The tactics are what you actually use to help you to implement the strategy. If you’re not really clear on what the strategy is, it becomes a problem.
